203,795. Lanston Monotype Corporation, Ltd., Pierpont, F. H., and Tipton, J. E. June 15, 1922. Single-type composing and casting machines; matrices.-The die-case of machines of the kind described in Specification 8633/99 is adapted to enable the machine, to cast from matrices of abnormal dimensions without the use of supplementary positioning-mechanism or reduction in the number of positions available for justification setting. The opening in the die-case is made slightly larger than usual, and the matrices are conveniently of two sizes some being twice, and others four times, the size of the normal matrices. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the matrices of four horizontal rows are of twice the normal size, with the exception of the end matrix B of each row, which is four times the normal size. The remaining rows are occupied by matrices of the larger size. The centring-cavities of the smaller matrices are central of the matrices in both directions, and those of the larger matrices are central in one direction only. Alternate gauge-pins of the series X are used for positioning the diecase in one direction, and all the gauge-pins of the series Y are used for positioning the die-case in the other direction. All of the gauge-pins X are used for justification, the pump being rendered inoperative when the position of the diecase does not correspond to a centring-cavity of a matrix. In a modification, Fig. 4, some of the matrices in the horizontal rows are staggered, and all of the gauge-pins X are employed for positioning the die-case. The supporting-rods pass through central holes in the matrices forming the main rows and through side grooves in the staggered matrices. Specifications 4726/05, 13209/09, 20554/09, 7979/12, 7980/12, and 130,961 also are referred to.
