Percussive tools.-Resonating chambers containing fluid, in which nodes and antinodes are produced in a manner similar to the sounding of an organ pipe, are used as elements in prime-movers. In the example shown in Fig. 7, a V-shaped pipe 21, 22 is sounded by the passage of the products of explosions through the throat 20 and an impulse turbine wheel 25 placed at an antinode in the pipe is rotated by means of the axial oscillations of the fluid in the pipe at that place. In Fig. 4, a pipe is shown which is excited by the periodic admission of a pressure fluid by way of a single inlet valve I or a valve at each end, the valves being operated in the proper phase relation. The action can also be assisted by the timed opening of valves at the nodes which communicate with suction apparatus. Gases introduced into the pipes do not travel beyond the first node and may be allowed to escape by an opening at the first anti-node. Cutting-tools and connecting-rod or ratchet mechanisms may be operated by the alternations of pressure obtaining at the nodes. Several examples of the application to turbines are given.
