Annealing.-To effect bright annealing of wire and the like, by the use of a reversible combination furnace and producer &c. gas, the gas under slight pressure is passed into one chamber b of the furnace by a flue b1 and passes into an annealing pot c in which the wire &c. which has been annealed is supported on trays d. By contact with the wire &c. the gas is heated and passes through a passage f into another pot c provided with trays containing wire to be annealed and out into the chamber a where it is mixed with air entering by the port a1 and burnt outside the pot c, thus causing the annealing of the wire therein. After combustion the gases pass by an outlet g1 to a port g' controlled by a valve g4 and thence to recuperators &c. By the operation of suitable valves, the operation is carried out in the reverse direction, gas being admitted by the port a2 and the charge in the right-hand pot removed and replaced by wire &c. to be annealed.
