215,421. Barr & Stroud, Ltd., and Stroud, W. Feb. 2, 1923. Modifying scale of readings.-In means for for converting motion according to one law into motion according to another law, applicable for the conversion of a scale of ranges into a scale of range-finder working-head movements or of gunsight elevations, the motions is conveyed by two or more mechanical routes each of which is active in turn while the remainder of the mechanism is held stationary. The shaft 1, Fig. 1, moving into the scale of ranges is secured to a planet spindle on which rotates a pinion 2 gearing with loose bevel wheels 3, 4 secured to wheels 5, 6, which. through mechanism 9 - - 14 of the kind described in Specification 133,974, drive bevel wheels 15, 17 gearing with a planet wheel 16 carried in a wheel 16 geared to the spindle 20 moving with the working-head of the range-finder. The mechanisms 9, 10, 11 and 12, 13, 14 are so designed that one provides for the conversion in ranges say from 2000 to 8000 yards while the other operates between 8000 and 32000 yds. A screw 23 is rotated by the shaft 1 to move a brush 25 over the two parts 26, 27 of a contact drum insulated by a strip 28 and arranged in electromagnetic circuits adapted to station the wheels 5, 6 respectively. The brush 25 either bridges the strip 28 to top both wheels 5, 6 momentarily or engages the strip only to free both wheels. To prevent shock in the former case the spindle of the planetwheel 2 is connected to the shaft by spring means of the kind described in Specification 129,124. In a mechanical stationing device, a gate adapted to engage alternatively with the wheels 5, 6 is operated by a rack shifted in either direction by a iounting-train of one-toothed wheels driven by the shaft 1. Auxiliary frictional driving- connections may be arranged between the shafts 1, 20 to relieve the driving strain. Flat spiral gearing of the kind described in Specification 129,345 supplemented by a clipping frictional drive may replace the gearing 9 - - 14. In driving through three or four routes, one or both of the wheels 5, 6 drives epicyclic gears, as shown in Fig. 4, the driven wheels 55 - - 58 of which drive through the necessary variable speed mechanisms on to epicyclic gears so arranged as to bring together the motions transmitted by the different routes. Specifications 11772/11, 618/14, and 15294/14 also are referred to.
