216,252. Johnston, C. F. March 14, 1923. Bell-operating mechanism, pneumatic.-In a pneumatic bell controlled by an electricallyoperated valve, the base of the mechanism constitutes a storage chamber for compressed air, whilst the control valve is operated by a solenoid or magnet placed axially with respect to the valve which it operates through a rod attached to or forming part of the core of the solenoid or the armature of the magnet. In one arrangement. Fig. 1, the valve comprises balls 10, 11 separated by a distance piece 12 and controlled by the armature 15 of an electromagnet 14 and by a restoring spring 13. The closure of switch 21 opens valve 10 to supply compressed air from the storage chamber 2 located in the base of the apparatus, to the cylinder 3, so that the piston 4 moves downwards and, by means of the pivoted lever 6, imparts an impulse to the bell. When the switch 21 is opened, spring 18 restores the lever 6 and piston 4, and the cylinder 3 is connected to the exhaust port 8. In order to obtain automatic repeated ringing, a second switch 27 is provided in series with interrupter contacts 24, 25 which are opened during the downward movement of the rod 5. In a modification, the piston is directly connected to the bell, the lever 6 being eliminated. The bells may be employed in carillons, the various switches being automatically operated by a perforated paper strip. One of the Provisional Specifications refers to means for adjusting the interrupter contacts so that rapid blows of short stroke or slow heavy blows of long stroke may be given to the bell as desired.
