182,707. Brookes, E. July 29, 1921. Pottery, throwing and turning.-A machine for trimming and rounding on the edges of clay articles for pottery, such as cups &c. comprises an intermittently rotatable chuck e, Fig. 2, having a disc g2 raised and lowered therein on a rod g and a hinged counterweighted arm 10 having a projection 14 and a rounding tool z. The clay article, which is moulded with a splayed flange and slightly higher than required, is placed in the disc g2, which is then lowered until the article makes contact with the chuck and revolves with it. The arm 10 then automatically falls, and the projection 14 engages the bell-crank lever 15, thus causing a knife Y to cut off the surplus clay from the edge of the article, which is then rounded off by a spring-controlled tool 2 adjustably mounted in a groove in the plate 32. The disc g2 is automatically raised to eject the finished article, by a cam 30 which actuates a slide 18 connected to the rod g by a lever 22, Fig. 3, loosely mounted on the shaft s. The chuck e is rotated intermittently by the slide o, Fig. 5, so as to engage the rope p between the pulleys g, h, and release the brake j from the pulley h. The slide o is reciprocated by means of a two-armed lever r mounted on the rocking shaft s and actuated by a cam 1 on the main shaft c. Forward motion of the slide o is assisted by a weighted guide-pulley 5 and spring 9. The arm 10 is automatically lowered by means of the cam 20 which reciprocates a lever E2, thus causing the rocking shaft s to rotate and lower a lever c and thus tighten the cable 11.
