215,872. Ashcroft, E. A. Feb. 27, 1923. Addition to 198,024. Electrolytic furnaces.-The process of the parent case is adapted for the production of a metal lighter than the electrolyte by depositing the metal into alloy with a heavy metal in a multiple-couple electrolyzer having electrodes adapted to contain alloy and thereafter setting free the lighter metal in another multiple couple electrolyzer. Magnesium and chlorine are obtained from magnesium chloride in an apparatus comprising two interconnected multiple-couple electrolyzers A, A2 having electrodes B, B2 provided with pockets b2 containing magnesium lead alloy, and passages b4. The chloride is fed through the passage a2, and chlorine and magnesium are removed through the pipes D2. D respectively. The connections may be reversed by means of a switch E, the chloride then being fed to the electrolyzer A through a similar passage a2. In this case chlorine forms in A and the magnesium collects in A2. In a modification, in which no reversing switch is provided, the pockets b2 in adjacent electrodes are interconnected by small pipes and a pump circulates the alloy through the apparatus. Carbon or graphite electrodes are used in the primary electrolyzer and iron or steel electrodes are used in the secondary. Specification 152,402 is referred to.
