Continuous apparatus for developing and like treatment. - Apparatus for use with a typographical composing machine, comprising a camera, developing, fixing, and washing chambers, mechanism for intermittently advancing a film through the camera and continuously operable mechanism for conveying the film through the chambers, has an actuating device for the intermittently operated mechanism operated by a member of the composing machine which is automatically actuated after exposure of a line of characters. In the construction described, the film 3, Figs. 1 and passes from a spool 11 in a removable film-box 2, past an exposure aperture 9 formed by adjustable shutters 10 in the camera 1. The film then passes through a box 4 containing intermediate conveying bands 38, 39, to developing, fixing, washing and drying apparatus 5, 6, 7, 8, having conveying bands 55, 56 driven continuously, for example by a motor, through gears on guiderollers 59, 60. The film is driven through the camera 1 by means of a pivoted lever 29 actuated intermittently by a member of the composing machine and having a pawl 28 engaging a ratchet 27 on a shaft 25, Fig. 3, driving a shaft 15, carrysprocket-rollers 12, Fig. 4, engaging the film,. through gear-wheels 25, 24, 21. The stroke of the lever 29 can be varied to vary the extent of advancement of the film by means of an adjustable eccentric 31 against which is is drawn by spring 30. The sprocket-rollers 12 and the rollers 13 and the other guide rollers may be adjustable on their shafts to take films of different widths. The film then passes between cutting blades 35, 36 to conveyer bands 38, 39 which may be intermittently or continuously driven from a guide roller 42 by means of a double-faced clutch 54, Fig. 3, splined on the shaft 50 of the roller 42, which can be engaged, by means of lever 66, either with a sprocket-wheel 49 loose on shaft 50 and connected by chain 51 with sprooket-wheel 48, secured on shaft 26, for intermittent drive, or with a sprocket-wheel 52 also loose on the shaft 50 and connected by a chain 53 to a sprocketwheel 65, secured to a roller 59, for continuous drive. A handle 75 is also provided for driving the shaft 50. The conveyer bands have raised edge portions 57, Fig. 6, between which the film may be gripped, and perforations 58. Only one band of the pair may have raised edges, or the upper band may be replaced by two marginal bands. A liquid-spraying arrangement may be provided in any or all of chambers 5, 6, 7 and consists of a tank 67, sprayers 69 for distributing treating-liquid on the film 3, and a rotary pump 70 geared to the driving mechanism of the bands 55, 56 for returning the liquid to the tank 67. The drying apparatus 8 consists of perforated drums covered with absorbent material and internally heated, for example, by gas-jets 72.
