Improvements in process for obtaining certain remedial principles of oils

The antirachitic principle of oils is extracted by saponifying the oil with alcoholic caustic alkali, e.g. caustic soda, dissolving the soaps in water and precipitating an insoluble soap by addition of a salt of an alkaline earth metal such as calcium chloride; the precipitate is then extracted with alcohol, acetone, &c., the extract concentrated to crystallize out the cholesterol, and the mother-liquor evaporated to dryness to obtain the active principle. The invention relates particularly to the treatment of cod-liver oil, but is applicable also to the extraction of the antirachitic principle from other fish-liver oils as well as fish oils and other oils.
