Fixed - chamber apparatus. - A rotary hollow shield is mounted to intersect the walls of the shoot and to intercept that quantity of material in the part of the shoot between the upper and lower portions of the shield. The shoot or hopper 2 containing the material is suitably inclined and its walls are intersected by a shield 3 in the form of a large portion of a cylinder which rotates on an axis 4 so that at one time the opening a b on its periphery will register with the upper part of the shoot and allow the contents to fall into the lower part of the shoot within the shield. On rotating the shield, the edge b of the opening cuts through the material until the upper part of the shoot is closed and on further movement the edge a begins to uncover the bottom of the shoot and allow the contents intercepted by the shield to be discharged. The upper wall 2d of the shoot is enclined so that the bottom of the upper portion is narrower than the top while the portion 2f is made adjustable to and from the centre of the shoot to vary the capacity. The part 2f is fitted with an inclined part 2g to guide material carried through the opening in which the edge b works into the lower portion of the shoot. The shield 3 has extending arms carrying counterbalancing weights which render the manipulation of the shield 3 by the handle easy to the operator.
