Optical toys.-An advertising device or toy comprises a transparent or translucent sheet c bearing two or three more pictures &c. a, b in two or more colours, one picture only at a time being seen by providing a background of a colour similar to that of the picture to be rendered invisible. The colour of the background can be changed by sliding a sheet f of the required colour behind the pictures, so as to show up a second picture. The faint outline which may be visible of the obliterated picture may be obscured by covering the sheet c with a layer g of semi-transparent material such as glazed paper, or by forming the pictures on one side of a sheet of glass, the other side of which is frosted or coated with tissue paper or gelatine. The pictures may be on one side of a single sheet, or on separate sheets, and may be gummed over an opening in a cardboard &c. front, or slide in interchangeably. The cardboard may form the front of a box blackened inside and provided with slits in its top for the introduction of pictures and backgrounds. The backgrounds may be on the two sides of a disc rotatable about a diametral axis, or form segments of a disc rotatable about a perpendicular axis. In a modification, a part or whole of the picture may be on the background and be hidden by the sliding sheet, the whole or part of the picture on the transparent front being hidden, when the sliding sheet is withdrawn, by a similarly coloured area on the background, which may consist of the background picture itself. The slide may be operated by clockwork, &c., and may be pivoted. The pictures may be such that they appear to move. The device may be combined with articles such as a match box or a chocolate box, and be operated by the sliding of the drawer.
