Back struts.-Spragging-devices for colliery trams and like vehicles, of the kind in which a sprag is dropped into engagement with the track if the haulage rope breaks, comprise a pair of sprags, one or the other of which can be rendered operative according to the direction of running of the vehicle. Each of the sprags 4, 5 comprises a pair of arms united at the track-engaging end 41, 51, and diverging towards the sides of the vehicle to the ends of a transverse shaft 11 upon which the sprags are pivoted. A central stiffening member extends from the ends 41, 51 of the sprags to the shaft 11. An arm 12 secured to the sprag 4 on one side of the vehicle is connected to a chain 15 and a corresponding arm and chain is provided on the other side of the vehicle for the sprag 5. The chain 15 connected with the sprag which is to be operative is attached to the haulage rope so that this sprag is held in the raised position only as long as there is tension in the rope. The other sprag is held permanently raised by a peg 20 passed through the corresponding chain 15 after @ has been tautened, and abutting against one of the guides 18 for the chain.
