An improved machine for the continuous withdrawing and cutting off of lengths of wire

Shearing.-A machine for feeding a continuous wire and severing it into uniform lengths for use as grid electrodes of thermionic valves, has a pair of clamping blocks a, b pivoted on rods g, and connected by a link k. A lead screw u through half nuts s, t successively moves the blocks. The clamp blocks a, b have rigid upper jaws c, e, and movable lower jaws d, f formed of U-shaped springs mounted on plungers q, r raised by cams o, p on the bedplate j for clamping the wire. At the end of a feed movement of the block a the plunger q is raised further by the cam o to sever the wire, by blades carried on the jaw c and the plunger q respectively, and the block is swung by a cam 15 to the position shown in Fig. 3 out of engagement with the lead screw allowing it to be returned by a spring to a position to grip the wire at the rear of the block b. The blocks are kept in engagement with the lead screw during feeding by pins 23, 24 working in a grooved bar 27.
