Shaking and jigging machines; processes. - Plastic porcelain clay or the like is moulded into insulators &c. by subjecting the mould to rapid vibrations of low amplitude during compression to eliminate stratification of the material. The drawing shows a machine in which the mould 6 filled with clay 8 is rapidly vibrated by a cam 10 having teeth 12 and an upper die 22 carried by a crosshead 13 loaded at 13a compresses the material. The head 13 is connected by a chain 15 to a piston within a cylinder 18, which piston is depressed by admitting compressed air through a pipe 13 to raise the upper die. Stops 28 limit the descent of the die, which is porous and is furnished with a perforated pipe 23 connected by pipes 24, 25 to pressure or exhaust pipes 21, 26. During moulding, air is exhausted from the die, and after moulding compressed air is admitted to free the moulded article. The mould 6 may be vibrated pneumatically.
