Air and gases, moistening.-In a vertical column divided into two parts through which water is continuously circulated, fresh reaction gases are heated and saturated with water vapour in the lower part, whilst in the upper part the reaction products are cooled and their water content condensed. At the base of the column is a regulating reservoir 17 in which water is maintained at a constant level by means of an overflow 21 and cold water supply 22. The water is delivered by the pump 19 through the tube 20 to the top of the upper part 3 of the column, whence it falls down bubbling plates, coke, &c., in the upper part and becomes heated at the expense of the hot reaction products from a catalyser 9 entering by the pipe 10 and leaving by the valved pipe 24, the gases being at the same time cooled and deprived of most of their water vapour content. The hot water then passes through the siphon tube 15 to the lower part 4 of the vertical column, where it meets the fresh gases for the catalyser which enter by the valved pipe 2 and leave by the pipe 5, and in descending the bubbling plates, coke, &c. the water delivers up its heat to the fresh gases which are at the same time saturated with water vapour. Additional water vapour required for the reaction in the catalyser 6 is supplied by a steam injector 7, whilst the power required for circulating the gases is derived from one or more centrifugals 6. The apparatus is intended for use in the catalytic manufacture of hydrogen from steam and carbon monoxide. Specifications 15498/02 and 136,189 are referred to.
