Checking shuttles and pickers; picking-motions; pickers. - In picking mechanism of the type claimed in the parent Specification, the cork picker 10 and the shuttle are checked by means of a strap &c. 5 connected to two curved discs 4 mounted on pivots 3 on a carrier arm 2 secured tu the rear wall of the shuttle box 1 and acted upon by springs 6. The curvature of the discs 4 is so arranged that the checking force of the strap quickly rises to a maximum and then remains nearly constant. The picker 10 has the same cross section as the shuttle box, which forms a guide for the picker. At the front and rear ends of its central part, the picker has protection means such as leather end pieces. A segment 14 on one of the discs acts on a roller on the pivotal support 12 of a brake block acted upon by a spring 13, so that the brake block can only be moved into its braking position after a determined movement of the strap 5.
