244,835. Ramsey, A. Sept. 25, 1924. Locks, cases for; bolts; lock mechanism, slider-type; spring mechanism; latches, preventing operation of; sliding bolts.-A lock with a sliding bolt is operated from the inside by turning a handle, and from the outside by turning a handle with one hand after inserting, turning and holding a key with the other. The inside and outside handles are mounted on separate spindles each having a follower which engages a lug on a blocking tumbler pivoted on the spindle of the outer handle and turns the tumbler through about 120‹ so that, engaging a finger in the tail of the bolt, it retracts it against its spring. The spindle of the outer handle is flattened and can be locked against rotation by key operated sliders acted on by a common spring. The bolt can engage the striking box when shot by separating a pair of spring-pressed hook-shaped catches. The bolt 4 has a tail 5 sliding in a casing 1 and projections 18 on a tumbler 17 pivoted an the outer handle spindle 11, engage lateral projections 19 on the tail 5 when the tumbler is blocking the shoulder 101 of the belt. The bolt is pressed outwards by a hooped spiral spring 6 attached to pins on the bolt and casing, and has an anti-friction roller 9 guiding it along the bottom 10 of the casing. The outer handle spindle 11 is flattened as at 20, Fig. 6, so that sliders 22 normally prevent its rotation. Retraction of the sliders against their common spring 24 by a key removes their shoulders 21 from the flat. 20 on the spindle which can then be turned to cause its follower 15 to engage the lug 16 on the tumbler 17 and turn this over. The tumbler is then disengaged from the shoulders 19, 191 of the bolt and engages the finger 35 thereon and retracts it as shown in Fig. 7. The key can only be used from the out side and the sliders are contained in a box 14 fixed to the outside of the casing. A boss 37 on the box 14 forms a bearing for the spindle 36 of the inside handle 38. This spindle carries a follower 39, Fig. 4, which engages a lug 40 on the tumbler 17 and retracts the boit in the same manner as the follower of the outside handle 8. For further security, a pin 26 can be advanced into a hole 27 in the tumbler, from the inside of the door. The casing has a flange and lip 3 extending round the door 2 to prevent forcing by a jemmy.
