A method of converting boilers with large water spaces and fire tubes into water tube boilers

Water-tube boilers.-A water-tube boiler intended particularly for use as a waste heat boiler is constructed from an old fire-tube boiler by detaching the rear tubeplate from the barrel, withdrawing the firetubes with the attached tube-plate and the combustion chamber or firebox, riveting the tubeplate to the front of the barrel, and so closing the barrel and the combustion chamber that they may serve as upper and lower drums, the tubes serving as connecting water-tubes. A watertube boiler having upper and lower drums 1, 5, Fig. 2, and connecting water tubes 6 is constructed from the fire-tube boiler shown in Fig. 1 by withdrawing the fire tubes and combustion chamber from the barrel and attaching the tube plate 7 to the other end of the barrel. The ends of the barrel and combustion chamber are closed by plates 10, 9 and the side apertures by covers. The lower drum may be formed from sections unriveted from the fire-tube boiler.
