249,185. Fagan, J. A,. Dec. 9, 1924. Untwisting ropes.-In a machine for untwisting and teasing ropes, mechanism comprising a roller 16 having barb-like teeth 17, 18 sloping in opposite directions is provided to ensure that not only is a positive feed given to the rope but that the rope is held against increase of the rate of feed above that of the feed rollers. The rope is held against the roller 16 by a spring-pressed corrugated platform 9. The untwisting head comprises a wheel-shaped element 6 having therein a guide passage 22 for the rope, the passage 22 being axial at its entrance, thereafter having for its direction a curve lying on the surface of an imaginary cone whose axis is the axis of rotation of the head. and ultimately merging into a groove in the circumference. The passage 22 may be curved either left-handed or right-handed or two such passages oppositely disposed may be provided so That the device may be used for old ropes of either twist. Flanges 2 are provided for preventing lateral movement of the rope, which leaves the head 6 in a direction tangential to the path of the teasing spikes of the doffer 26. The doffer 26 is mounted so that its position can be adjusted by means of a screw 5a and block 5 carried by the machine frame. The head 6 and doffer 26 are enclosed within a casing in such manner that the material after treatment is directed into a reversible chute with discharges to one side of the machine.
