252,104. Turner, A., and Turner, W. E., (Turner Machine Co., Inc.). Oct. 27 1925. Addition to 204,740. Trimming, paring, rounding, and the like. - Consists in modifications of the machine described in the parent Specification. The carriage on which is mounted the trimming knife, and brim-guiding jaws is arranged to be rocked as well as reciprocated during the rotation of the hat, so that the knife and jaws are maintained normal to the part of the brim being trimmed. The operating handle actuates the movable guide, knife, and starting clutch by cams. The movable guide is initially moved beyond normal position to bring the starting and finishing ends of the cut in the same line. A feed wheel is provided in the fixed guide. Improved one rotation mechanism is provided for the driving clutch. The carriage 36, Fig. 3, on which are mounted the guides engaging the brim and the trimming knife is connected to the slide 33, described in the parent Specification as auto. matically adjusted by the clamping of the hat on the holder, by a screw 38 engaging a slot in the slide 33. This connection allows the slide 36 to rock laterally about the screw 38, while it is reciprocated by the eccentric which compensates for the difference between the major and minor axes of the hat. The effect of the rocking is to cause the guides and knife to maintain a uniform relation to the part of the brim being operated on. The fixed guide 40 is provided with a feed wheel 52 with a roughened surface, which wheel projects through the central portion of the curved guide, and is driven by a fibre wheel 54 engaging the rotating table 21 on which the hat is mounted. The movable guide 41, for the inside of the brim, is mounted on a pivoted arm 59 engaged by a spring plunger 63 to urge the guide upwards, the arm 59 being forced in the other direction, to close the guide on the brim, by a cam on the shaft 86 of a starting handle 85. This cam, Fig. 7, is formed with a recess housing a rocking spindle 92 provided with a blade 93 the function of which is slightly to over-position the guide 41 to press the brim well down before the trimming knife bridges the space between the jaws. Further movement of the starting handle positions the knife, and causes the blade 93 to rock anti-clockwise to disengage the arm 59 and allow the guide to rise to normal position. The pivoted knifeholder 68, Fig. 3, is connected by a spring link 76 with a pivoted member 78, operated by a second cam on the shaft 86, to cause the knife to bridge the space between the brim guides. The link 76 carries a spring plunger 83 to urge the knife to inoperative position. The knife may be readily removed by springing the link 76 laterally off a pin on the holder 68, when the holder may be swung out of the slot in the guide 41 and slipped off its upper pivot. For starting the machine, the shaft 86 carries an arm provided with a roller depressing a rod 139, Fig. 9, formed with a wedge engaging a pivoted arm 125 with a forked end actuating the friction clutch. The arm 125 is maintained in clutch-engaging position by a latch 128 tripped at the conclusion of the machine's cycle by an arm 130 on a power-driven shaft 112. A slide 148, Fig. 19, pivoted to an arm on the rod 139 turns a cam 151 as the rod is depressed, which cam raises a rod 153 to clamp the slide 33 so that it shall not move while the hat is being operated on. The rod 139 is released, when the hat holder has made one rotation, by a pin 164, Fig. 16, on the rotating table, engaging a wedge member 163 which turns a fork 161 engaging one end of a pin 160 and withdrawing a spring plunger 155 out of the path of a block 154 clamped to the rod 139.
