253,649. Ashley, A. E., (Executrix of Ashley, T. J.), and Aldridge & Ranken, Ltd. April 8, 1925. Tipping-apparatus.-Relates to apparatus in which a wagon is secured on a rocking cradle which rolls sideways on rockers a1 under the action of gravity, the movement being controlled by a brake. The brake acts upon a rod j pivoted to one side of the rocking cradle, and is normally " on " but is released by hand-control to permit movement of the cradle. As shown in Fig. 2, the rod j slides between brake-shoes k, k1. The shoe k1 is pivoted on a fixed support, and the shoe k is pivoted on a lever l, so as to be applied by toggle action when the lever arm l is lowered. The lever arm l is controlled by the weight m and hand-wheel r. The cradle with the empty wagon is righted by the counterweight W. The wagon is secured on the cradle by chains g passed round the buffers and provided with turnbuckles h. A stop u prevents overrunning. The longitudinal girder d of the cradle is received, on righting, between tapered guides which ensure that the rails f on the cradle register with the track. In a modification, the rod carries a piston moving in an oil-cataract cylinder which is kept filled through a check valve, the ends of the cylinder being in communication through a selfclosing control valve. An alternative method of securing the wagon is shown in Fig. 5 for use with heavy wagons of various sizes. A framework w at each end of the structure carries a counterweighted bar v. Brackets v3are arranged to slide on the bar v so as to be brought near the corners of the wagon, and are secured to the cradle by ropes v5 with turnbuckles v6. The frames w carry platforms w1 for the workmen, and these platforms are pivoted and weighted so as to swing clear of the wagon.
