Method of and apparatus for preventing contamination of the atmosphere of tunnels and subways by the exhaust gases from self-propelled vehicles

Ventilating tunnels.-Exhaust gases from a power-driven vehicle are prevented from contaminating the atmosphere of tunnels, subways &c. by connecting the exhaust pipe K of the vehicle by pipe H and elbow G to a chamber 64 in a trolley member D, which is adapted to be connected to the vehicle by chains 120 and to be drawn thereby over valve chambers B in an exhaust duct A located in a channel 25 in the flooring of the tunnel. The trolley D is provided on one side with a cam E having inclined upper surfaces 92, 93 adapted to co-operate with rollers 63 on arms 62 connected to the hinge pins 55 of valves 52 in the chambers B, so as to raise each valve 52 in succession and allow the exhaust gases in the chamber 64 to be withdrawn in an intermittent manner through successive chambers B into the duct A whence the gases are drawn through pipes 30, 41 and 40 by suitable exhausting apparatus. The trolley D is resiliently mounted on wheels 90 running in shelves 31 on the side walls 26 of the channel 25. The wheels 90 are fastened on axles 88, the axle bearings 80 being provided with plugs 81 which are guided in spring seats 76, 78 on the trolley D. A shaft 126, with detachable cover 130, and chamber 127 allow of inspection of the pipe 40.
