Creasing.-In the formation of creases in cardboard or the like to facilitate folding in the manufacture of boxes, the cardboard is bent round a rotating wheel and is deflected into the space between two converging wheels or bodies adapted to complete the formation of a compressed U-shaped crease. The machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2 forms two creases simultaneously and comprises two pairs of wheels, each pair being constructed and arranged in the following manner :- A vertical cylindrical wheel c, formed on a sleeve c1 which is feathered on a driving- shaft b, co-operates with a conical inclined wheel d running on an inclined hub d4, the wheels being connected by a flexible coupling c4. The wheels are provided with serrated rims c2, d' having inner faces c3, d6 which converge to a narrow gap at the top. The hub d4 is mounted on the sleeve c1 and has an arm d' connected by a rod d3 to a, rocking arm d2, the hub j2 of an arm j being arranged between the hub d4 and arm d2. A spring c5 forces the wheels apart and holds the arm d2 in contact with a stop c'. The wheels are moved axially to bring the gap into register with the crease line by turning a threaded shaft i which engages a threaded boss j1 on the arm j. The angular position of the wheel d with respect to the wheel c is adjusted by rocking the arms d1, d2, this being effected by turning a threaded. shaft n which engages a threaded boss n2 on a link n3 connected to the rod d3. Simultaneously with adjustment of the angular position, the gap between the wheels is adjusted by means of wedges o1 which abut on the hub j2 and are pivoted on the boss n2. To permit independent adjustment of the angular position and gap, the wedges may be operated by an independent shaft. The wheel c is engaged at the top by spring-pressed rollers e, and an adjustable blade or deflector h is arranged above or partly within the gap between the wheels, the rear edge hx being slightly in front of the narrowest part of the gap. An incline h2 may be arranged between bottom h1 and rear edge. The rollers and blade are supported on a slide e1 mounted on guides a1 and adjustable by means of a threaded shaft f1 which is geared to the shaft i, the shafts being rotated simultaneously by a handle k1. The blade is secured to a holder g3 vertically adjustable on a bracket g2 which is adjustable horizontally on the slide e1 by means of a screw g1. The cardboard is placed on a table p and is bent by the rollers e, the blade h deflecting the cardboard into the gap and thereby forming a crease which is gradually squeezed by the wheels. During the formation of the crease, the part of the cardboard that overlies the wheel d is bent slightly upwards on the line of the crease, thereby permitting formation of the crease without tearing. Shafts i, f are formed with right and left hand threads for the purpose of simultaneously operating the adjusting-device associated with the two pairs of wheels. The rollers e may be dispensed with, the blades h being arranged to bend the cardboard round the wheels and to deflect it into the gaps.
