Toothed-wheel gearing; variable-speed gearing. -In a tricycle or like vehicle in which propulsion is effected from manually reciprocated or oscillated. levers, and in which a single or multiple speed gear-box is fitted with an intermediate shaft between the driving and the' driven shafts, the intermediate shaft is slidablv mounted in the gear-box and the gears are rotatively mounted and longitudinally fixed thereon. In the construction shown in plan in Fig. 1, the driving shaft D is fitted with cranks B by means of which it is given a continuous rotation from reciprocating levers. A long gear-wheel C fixed to the shaft D meshes with the larger gear L of two connected gears L, K which are slidable with the intermediate shaft G to give any one of three speeds. In the position shown, the low gear is in operation through the gear train C, L, K, Q, the final gear Q being keyed to the axle T or driving it through a differential gear. For the second speed, the gear wheel L meshes with the final gear-wheel R and, for top gear, dogs M on the side of the gear-wheel L mesh with corresponding dogs on one member of a free-wheel clutch driving a gear-wheel J which is permanently in mesh with the final gear-wheel S on the axle.
