Charging and discharging; cooling discharged materials.-In the drying and distillation of lignite, peat, or non-coking coals the charge is fed to the annular space between an externally - heated brick cylinder a and a series of overlapping rings h, and passes through the retort continuously and the coke is cooled by passage through a box p provided with thin metal pipes cooled by water circulation through pipes h1, h2.
