Improvements in or relating to means for transferring the matrices from the first elevator to the second elevator of a matrix composing and type-line casting machine
274,753. Linotype & Machinery, Ltd., (Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen Fabrik Ges.). Feb. 24, 1927. Distributing matrices. - A spring-controlled stop or resistant is provided at the point at which the matrices are transferred from the first elevator 2, Fig. 1, to the lifter-bar 4 of the second elevator, in order to prevent thick matrices from tilting and consequently failing to engage the lifter-bar. In one form, the resistant consists of a leaf spring 8, which is carried by a lever 10, pivoted on the transfer channel 3, and is adapted to bear against the foot or the lower lugs of the leading matrix. The resistant is normally held by a spring 13, Fig. 2, against an abutment 12, and is pushed back by the advancing line into an inclined position, in which it is held bv a spring detent 14, so as to clear the feet of the matrices. The descent of the first elevator restores the resistant to operative position by engaging the lower end of 'the lever 10. In a modification, the resistant is held in position by a spiral spring serving as a friction brake, and, after being pushed back by the matrix line is restored to operative position by a pawl on the line-shifter link. The resistant may be in the form of a roller, or two rollers may be carried at opposite ends of a pivoted arm, which is held in place by a spring detent engaging a notched disc. In this form, the resistant is restored to position by engagement of the lower roller by the first elevator during its descent.
