275,017. Alexander, R. D. T., Joyce, H. W., Leslie, D., and Green, L. Aug. 4, 1926. Sleepers, pot; sleepers, securing rails to; creeping of rails, preventing; chair keys.-A metal pot or plate sleeper 1 has a raised hollow or T-shape rail support 2 having a narrow rail seat, the means for securing the rail 3 being independent of the means for securing the tie-bar 8 and allowing a change of rail or gauge. The fixed jaw 4, Fig. 1, is recessed to receive a liner 12 while the clip 7 is secured by a bolt 9 carrying a ferrule 20, the ferrule and liner being changed to vary the gauge or for a different rail. The bolt-head 17 is recessed to receive the tie-bar 8 to prevent the the bolt turning. The sleeper has an inclined surface 6 engaged by the clip 7, a base flange 48 thickened at 49 at the outer edges, and base ribs 59, 60. The flange 48 may be thickened where notched to receive the tie-bar. The support 2 is strengthened by diagonal ribs 53, while the sleeper base has drainage holes. In a modification, the jaw 4 is replaced bv a clip 7, both bolts 9 having ferrules 20. The clip 26, Figs. 5, 7, is secured by a taper key 30 guarded by a cover flange 42 on the sleeper the lower parts of the key and key-recesses being rounded. The clip has a lug 39 entering a notch in the rail flange to prevent creep. If the rail is not notched, the clip is reversed and the lug 39 enters a notch in the clip recess 29. The width of the rail support is about one third the width of the sleeper base, while the rail seating may be narrower than the support.
