Apparatus for the application of cold in the manufacture of flours

Flour, treatment by cooling.-A current of artificiallycooled air or cold atmospheric air is directed from a pipe h through the grinding apparatus i1 of a mill, shown in diagrammatic plan in Fig. 2, and is also passed in countercurrent to the ground material in the ascending branches a of elevators conveying the flour to bolting apparatus o, Fig. 1. The material falls from the grinding apparatus through shoots k to the bottom of the elevators, which are there enlarged as shown at l to decrease the air velocity and separate the material. A part of the cold air enters at h', and after expanding in an enlarging passage n descends to about the middle of the branches a whence it flows by way of pipes f and a filter e to a fan c. Another current of air is drawn up the branches a to the pipes f. Where the air is artificially cooled it is passed through a refrigerator g to the pipes h, h1, but atmospheric air may enter by an opening w and leave by a valve x. The descending branches b of the elevators, which are of smaller crosssection than the branches a, are fitted with flexible baffles r surrounding the buckets, whereby the air is carried down and cools the empty buckets. Conveyers m are arranged in the pipe f to remove deposited material, and electrical pyrometers s, t and dampers q, v, Fig. 1, are provided to facilitate regulation of the cooling. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect 91 (3) (a) the invention was described with reference to Fig. 1 (Cancelled). This Figure does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
