Purifying liquids; filters with loose filtering-materials. - Water to be softened for steam generator and like plants is pumped through a pipe b' and an injector b, thus drawing a solution of caustic soda from a boiler a through a pipe a1. A solution of sodium carbonate is supplied with the water or through a third pipe to the injector casing. The mixed water and reagents enter a casing c beneath a baffle c1. Precipitated impurities settle at the bottom of the vessel and in a funnel d. Blow-off pipes c3, d1 with valves c4, d2 are provided. The water rises through wood-fibre or other filtering-material, held between the perforated plates e', and passes away through a pipe f. An additional pump may be connected in the pipe a'.
