Manganese sulphate and oxides are prepared by decomposing ores, wastes and the like containing manganese with dilute sulphurous acid, separating and boiling down the manganese sulphate lye and roasting the sulphate in a closed vessel so as to utilize cyclically the sulphur dioxide freed. The sulphate may be roasted with carbon, and then sintered with air admitted according to the oxide desired.
