291,123. Crichton, J., and Crichton & Co., Ltd., J. Dec. 21, 1926. Separating by gravity.-Apparatus for separating oil from water, which can be fitted on a barge or the like for dealing with the water discharged from ships' oil tanks or bilges, comprises a receiving hopper A, a primary separator B, a settling-tank D and filters or scrubbers through which the water is finally passed before discharge. The water passes from A to the bottom of an inner wall b1 of the separator B, flows over the wall b1, under a wall b2 and over a wall b3, enters through an opening b5 an intermediate compartment C and passes on to the settling-tank D through an opening c1. Oil collects in compartments b6, b7 from which it passes into an upward extension b8 and thence over a weir b9 on to the sloping top b10 of the compartment b7. Oil collecting on the water in the hopper A and oil separating in the compartment C also flow on to the sloping top b10, all the oil from which is passed through a pipe f1 to a storage tank F. The water passes over and under a series of baffles d2, d3 and rises through pipes d5 into coke scrubbers or filters from which it is discharged. Oil in the settling tank rises into open-topped longitudinal skimming troughs E which have hinged doors at the end, through which the oil can be discharged on to the sloping top b10. Heating coils may be provided at suitable points to aid separation. The control means for the several oil weirs are arranged so that they can be manipulated by an attendant who can observe the surface b10. The primary separator B and the storage tank F are placed amidships on the barge, the main hold forming the settling tank D. There may be air spaces between the sides of the tank D and the hull of the vessel. Modifications are described in which the compartments b6, b', communicate with separate upward extensions, and in which the tank D is divided longitudinally, the water flowing forward on one side and then returning on the other.
