291,744. International General Electric Co., Inc., (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.). June 7, 1927, [Convention date]. Low - pressure metallic - vapour apparatus.- Mercury jet pumps for removing the air from rectifiers are provided with devices whereby the mercury content of the jet pump is under constant supervision and control and is maintained constant. An evacuated glass tube c, Fig. 2, is connected with the mercury container and serves to indicate the difference in mercury vapour pressures. It is preferably rotatable as shown c1 for convenience in evacuation. In a modification, the mercury container of the pump is connected with a mercury cup t, Fig. 3, through a barometric rising tube b, the level in the pump being corrected at any time by raising or lowering the vessel t. To render the observed level independent of the vapour pressure in the pump, the tube s, Fig. 4, is connected with the mercury container and at its upper end with the vapour chamber. Mercury is introduced to or removed from the pump by admitting or withdrawing air from an airtight vessel f connected through a tap l with the jet pump and through a further tube with the preliminary pump. The equalization occurs automatically in both directions if the pump and the rectifier are at corresponding heights and the cathode k is connected by a tube n with the mercury container of the pump. Specification 19793/14, [Class 71, Injectors &c.], is referred to.
