Retort furnaces; cooling discharged materials. -Tin ores or slimes are treated with sulphur vapour or sulphuretted gas in an externally heated retort c. the ore &c. being supplied from a hopper a to an endless belt b, and sulphur vapour being admitted under pressure at c. Preheating is effected in a chamber f, volatile products and excess of sulphur vapour pass out at c', and solid products pass into a cooling-chamber j, whence they are fed by conveying-means b1 surrounded by cooling-means k to a leaching vessel l.
