Roasting-furnaces; retort furnaces; charging and discharging.-In a furnace for roasting ores, sulphides, arsenides, and metallurgical products generally, of the kind comprising an externallyheated vertical retort a, the heating-chamber of which is insulated from the atmosphere by a passage c through which the air for combustion is passed, the latter, before entering the passage c, is initially preheated by contact with the hot roasted material in a pit h. The air enters through the rotary discharger q, and passes partly through the passages j, to the upper end of the heating-chamber b and partly in an upward direction through the retort a to effect oxidation. Gas from a producer d is supplied through a passage e to the upper end of the chamber b, the waste gases escaping into a flue g from which they pass by a conduit n into a tunnel drier 1. 'The material heated in the drier l is fed to the retort a by a gas-tight rotary feeder n, while the treated product is discharged into the pit h by a reciprocating table p. The material to be treated is preferably ground and made up, with a suitable binder, into briquettes which are dried in the tunnel l.
