300,747. Stephenson, R. Sept. 29, 1927. Sea and retaining walls; groins and the like.- Retaining walls, groins, and like structures for river banks and tidal-water shores are built up, wholly or in part, of hollow concrete or like units which are then filled with sand, mud, or like material by the action of the current or the tide. Fig. 1 shows a river bank covered by cribs formed of rectangular, T-shaped, or cruciform parts 3, 5, 4 and at the lowest edge one or more open-end box-like structures 2, which become filled with mud &c. A training-wall for a river may be constructed by placing end-to-end a series opentopped tanks of concrete &c., which preferably taper upwards in cross section. These are floated into position between barges, or otherwise deposited; the trough-like structure thus formed then fills with sand &c. Two or more of such walls may be built parallel to one another so as to form a wide training-wall, the space or spaces between them being optionally provided with cribs 3 - - 5, and becoming filled with sand &c. These walls may be raised by superimposing one or more series, and may be connected by cement or otherwise. Fig. 3 shows a structure suitable for training-walls. It consists of a box-like structure with flanges 8 and strengthening-bars 9; the bottom may be open or closed. Sea walls and groins may be similarly constructed.
