Checking watchmen &c.-A key or other control device for operating a watchman's clock is incorporated with mechanism to be supervised and is pivotally mounted within a casing so as to be inaccessible unless the part of the mechanism to be checked is in a desired position. As shown in conjunction with a valve, Fig. 1, the casing 10 has an indicator plate 13 to which is attached a rod 15 the lower end being guided in a slot in the end of a boss 17 on a housing 16 containing the control key 18. The key is pivotally mounted on a shaft 19 and is provided with a cam shaped nose 23 that co-operates with a freely movable rod 21 mounted in the boss 17. The key normally occupies the position shown in Fig. 4 but when the valve is fully open the rod 15 presents a notch 25 therein to the end of the rod 21 so that when the door 27 of the housing 16 is opened by releasing a lock 28 a spring 26, or the weight of the key, allows it to move to the position shown in Fig. 3 the key being then accessible to the watchman who inserts it into the shank 20 of his clock for the purpose of producing the record. The rod 15 may be provided with several notches to permit the use of the watchman's clock under different conditions.
