Saws, sharpening.-In a machine for grinding the teeth of saws of the type having high cutting teeth and lower clearing teeth arranged alternately, the grinding-wheel is actuated so that it performs the required deep and shallow operative strokes alternately, and the saw is thus completely sharpened without re-setting. The machine frame 1 carries an angularly adjustable head 2 through which passes a central actuating shaft 3 carrying an eccentric 11 engaging a block 12 working in a member 13 over which engages a forked member 14. The member 14 carries a pin 15 engaging in a block 20 which is horizontally adjustable by a screw 16 in a slotted plate 17 which is thus vertically reciprocated. A housing 10 carrying the grinding-wheel 19 is adjustable vertically on this plate by means of a screw 18. In order to enable the grinding-wheel to grind high and low teeth alternately, the shaft 3 carries a pinion 4 engaging a pinion 5 which drives through a clutch a shaft 8 carrying an eccentric 21 engaging a slot in the oscillating member 13. This horizontally reciprocates the member 13 which has inclined top and bottom edges so that a rising and falling movement is imparted to the slide 14 and hence to the grinding-wheel, the movement being so timed that on its operative strokes the grinding-wheel shapes the required alternating high and low teeth on the work.
