319,081. Hall, I. June 25, 1928. Surface and outline gauges.-The gauge shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is provided for checking stud seals attached to the ears of animals, or to articles such as clothing, and comprises an identification disc 1, Fig. 1, having a distinguishing surface contour, for example radial ribs 7 in a star pattern and a peripheral rim 6 with a notch 8. The gauge consists of a tube 9 closed at one end and containing at the other end a spring-pressed plunger 10 adapted to be depressed by the identification disc when the parts are in correct register, to a predetermined extent indicated by a pointer 17 reading over a scale within the tube and exposed through a slot 16. The pointer 17 forms part of a lever 13 pivoted on a support 14 within the tube and bearing against the plunger under the action of a spring 18 fixed to the support 14. The mouth of the tube has an upturned shoulder 22 with a projection to register with the peripheral notch of the identification disc, and the plunger is contoured to correspond with the raised pattern on the disc, so that full depression of the plunger is obtained when the parts register, in which case the rim of the disc rests on the shoulder 22. Rotation of the plunger is prevented by means of a longitudinal groove therein engaged by a grub screw 20. In a simplified construction, the plunger is extended in length beyond the slot in the tube and bears an index line for register with arrow marks on the tube, a spiral spring is located between the end of the plunger and the closed end of the tube, and rotation is prevented by means of a groove and a screw. The gauge shown in Fig. 10 is provided for an additional check in conjunction with recesses in the opposite disc member of the identification device, which may also have a peripheral rim with one or more notches. The gauge consists of a number of spring-supported stems 27 within a tubular casing 25, normally projecting at one end, and coming flush in apertures 26 at the other end when depressed by a disc having recesses of the correct disposition and depth; the end of the casing may be shaped to receive a peripheral rim with one or more notches.
