Dec. 3, 1928 Pulping-engines. - The bed-plates of a pulp beater are arranged to rock about an axis D within the angle YZX subtended at the centre of the drum by the bed plate. In one form, Fig. 1, the plate C mounted with rubber blocks H in a carrier C1 is pivoted at D, the assembly being supported on pivots F by links E having a screw adjustment G, G1, G2, and a pressure adjustment effected by a weight G9 which is moved along a rack-beam G7 by a hand-wheel G'‹ and pinion. In an arrangement as applied to a conical refiner the shell is provided with bed-plates mounted to rock on pivots 16a, Fig. 7. The bed plate may be arranged to be supported by springs or flexible material. It may be mounted in a resilient support carried on a plate pivoted to the carrier, or be supported by springs and provided with rubber &c. blocks at each end, or be curved and lie in a curved recess in the carrier with resilient cushions arranged at each end.
