325,762. Siemens & Halske Akt.- Ges. Nov. 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Beryllium alloys, obtaining.-In the production of beryllium alloys, particularly those with a high beryllium content by electrolysis of a molten bath, the alloying metal is introduced into the bath by anodic solution. The crucible or the bottom thereof is connected as anode and one or more cathodes, which may be cooled are dipped into the bath from above. The alloying metal is introduced, in the form of powder or filings, in definite quantities from time to time. The metal should have a specific gravity greater than that of the bath so that it sinks to the bottom and is thereby anodically polarized. The temperature should be below the melting point of the metal. The amount of metal added should not be such that the specific gravity of the deposited alloy is greater than that of the bath. The bath may consist of a mixture of the fluorides of beryllium and of one or more alkaline earth metals: its specific gravity may be reduced by the addition of alkali metal halides. Directions are given for obtaining an alloy containing 15 per cent of copper, one containing 35 per cent of nickel, and one containing 3 per cent of iron. An alloy containing 50 per cent of copper, alloys with the heavy metals, and a coppernickel-beryllium alloy may also be obtained.
