328,733. Lloyd, D. March 14, 1929. Lantern screens.-A pivotally-mounted antidazzle or fog-penetrating device for vehicle and like lamps comprises a light-modifying disc or other screen having a central clear portion surrounded by two or more concentrically arranged differently coloured transparent or translucent portions, the colour portion next to the clear portion being darker than the next outer coloured portion. The screen may be formed by placing coloured material between two clear glass discs cemented together at their edges, and the central clear portion may be provided by a hole in the screen. In the form shown in the Figures, the disc comprises a centre circular clear portion 22, an inner annular green portion 23, and an outer annular amber portion 24. The disc is provided with a supporting rim 20 carried by a standard 21 mounted on one end of an arm 13, the other end of which is formed as a boss 14 loosely surrounding a pivot stud 12 which is mounted on the horizontal part 11 of a bracket 10 fixed to the mudguard or other part of a vehicle. The boss 14 is rotatably mounted on the part 11 by means of ball bearings and is provided on its upper side with a cylindrical housing 16 closed by a cover plate 17. 'The housing 16 accommodates a spiral spring 18 whereof one end is connected to the housing and the other end to the stud 12. A Bowden wire 25 is connected at one end to a lug 26 on the housing 16 and at the other end to a finger grip 27 on a dashboard 31 or other part within reach of the driver. The finger grip comprises a shank 28 slidably mounted in a sleeve 30 which is formed at its end 32 as a stop for a transverse pin 29 carried by the shank 28. By releasing the pin 29 from the stop 32 and turning the finger grip 27 through 90‹, the pin 29 enters slots 33 in the sleeve 30 and the disc 19 is returned to its inoperative position above, below, or on either side of the lamp by means of the spiral spring 18. A pin 34 on the part 11 prevents the shank 28 being completely withdrawn from the sleeve 30. When not in use the disc may be protected by a metal shield fitted to or near the lamp, and when the lamp is adjustably mounted on the vehicle the disc may be coupled to the lamp to move with it. The arm 13 may be slotted, or other means may be provided, for varying the position of the disc relatively to the lamp, and when in use the disc is disposed in front of the lamp a distance equal to about half the diameter of the lamp face so as to allow part of the light to be projected laterally. According to the Provisional Specification the disc may be of a single colour.
