Building-blocks, special shapes of.-Retaining walls for piers, moles, quays, embankments, &c., are built of recessed pillar-like blocks, the horizontal section of which is I-shaped, each block being composed wholly or mainly of a vertical rib and vertical or nearly vertical wings. Figs. 1 and 6 show a wall, each pillar of which is built up of four layers of blocks, each with a central rib and wings forming the inclined rear wall, which may be uniformly sloped from top to bottom, or stepped. The upper and lower blocks may be tapered, as shown at A, Fig. 6, or of rectangular-section, as at B, Fig. 6. The enlargements A, B of the lower blocks may be omitted as at C, Fig. 6.
