Railway locomotives, steam-turbine.-In a condensing turbine locomotive in which the auxiliary machines E, F, G, H are arranged in groups driven by separate auxiliary turbines A, B, the steam for the auxiliary turbine B which drives machines which have to run at variable speed is taken from a point beyond the regulating valve D by which the turbine A is governed to constant speed. The variable speed turbine may drive the cooler fan and the cooling-water pump, and the governed turbine may drive the boiler feed pump, the condensate pump, the condenser air pump and the brake air pump. The auxiliary turbines may be arranged in parallel as shown in Fig. 1, or in series as shown in Fig. 2. They may exhaust into the condenser of the main turbine or the exhaust of one or both turbines may be passed to preheaters. Part of the steam may be passed to a preheater at an intermediate stage.
