340,556. Stuffing-boxes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Wentz, J. F. ; 622, West 114th Street, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 23, 1929, No. 28864. [Class 122 (v).] A packing-box through which an electric cable passes into an impregnating tank comprises metallic tubes 23, 32 connected by a flexible pipe 281 of rubber reinforced with canvas, the tube 23 having an external flange for attachment to the end-plate 22 of the tank. The pipe 281 is secured to the tubes 23, 32 by wire bindings 29, 35. Constrictions are formed in the rubber tube by a plurality of metal washers 30 separated by rubber or metal spacing-washers 31. The internal diameter of the washers 30 is slightly greater than the diameter of the cable 13 passing through the gland. The edges of the washers may be rounded or chamfered. The cable is guided by grooved rollers carried in the tubes 23, 32, as shown. In modified constructions the washers are accommodated in grooves formed in the wall of the pipe 281, or washers 30 abut against one another, the spacing-washers 31 being omitted.
