PICT:0343388/III/1 PICT:0343388/III/2 A machine for washing animal substances with water and separating the fat from the water comprises a chamber 3 having a lateral outlet 103 for the material, an opening at the bottom and horizontal brushes 4 . . 8 forming a space in which the material is cleaned, and a spray pipe 39; the chamber 3 being disposed above a tank 9, preferably tapering downwardly, having an overflow 16 and a discharge opening regulable by a valve 12. The lighter materials, such as fat, are discharged with water through the overflow 16, whilst the heavy impurities are discharged through the valve 12. The overflow 16 discharges into a tank 11, Fig. 2, having baffles 18, 21 between the body of the tank and the outflow 22 whereby water escapes freely whilst fat remains floating until skimmed of. An emptying cock 23 is provided on the tank 11. The front 31 of the chamber 3 is secured by wing nuts 34, and is removable to facilitate the cleaning of the brushes. The bottom of the chamber is bevelled inwardly at 30*, 31* to direct the discharge into the tank 9. The spray is provided by a pipe 39 which is supplied with water at a temperature which can be regulated by the cold water valve 86, the hot water valve 87 and the steam valve 88. The thermometer 91 indicates the temperature of the spray water and the valve 93 controls the admission of the water into the chamber 3. The handle of the valve 93 is interconnected with the belt striker of the pulleys driving the brushes 4 . . 8 so that the water is shut off when the brushes are stationary.
