[Class 123 (ii).] Water-tube boilers particularly for locomotives and portable engines comprise a bundle of inclined tubes 1 arranged within the main longitudinal body 6 of the boiler the inner surface of which may be lined with chamotte, asbestos, &c., shorter tubes 5 covering the firebox side walls, and each of the tubes 1, 5, is connected to collecting chambers 10, 11 by separate connection tubes 12, 13, a tight joint being obtained by means of lens-shaped packing rings 14. To enable the tubes to be removed, their ends adjacent the firebox are sufficiently reduced to permit their packing flanges 15 to be pulled through bores 9 in the wall. Flanges 16 or 17 for securing the other ends of the tubes and the connection tubes 13 in position are fixed to supporting bars 8 in the smoke chamber 3 by bolts 18 or 19, the bars being recessed, on both sides to allow of passage of the tubes through the intervening space. Some of the tubes may be used for steam superheating.
