[Class 123 (ii).] The beating surface of steam boilers is increased by welding to the fire sides of the boiler walls or a part of them a large number of small metal projections such as studs, which may be jacketed with another fire-resistant metal or with refractory material. A protective member e.g. of graphite may be inserted in a dove-tailed groove formed between two oppositely inclined projections. Cylindrical copper studs 1¢ inches long with a diameter of ¥ inch are suitably employed.
