Manufacture of sulphonation products of fats, fatty oils, fatty acids or aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight

In the sulphonation of fats, fatty oils, fatty acids and aliphatic hydrocarbons containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule, by means of sulphur trioxide, fuming sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid, liquid sulphur dioxide is used as a diluent. The latter acts also as a catalyst and enables mineral oils such as lubricating oils to be sulphonated to a high degree. In examples: (1) castor oil is sulphonated with sulphur trioxide in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide; (2) a motor oil is similarly sulphonated.
