PICT:0348006/III/1 In the recovery of gases or vapours from solid adsorbents by treatment with a flushing medium such as steam, the vapours issuing from the apparatus are passed through a heat accumulator. The heat thus recovered may be used for any purpose, for example for heating the gas which is subsequently passed through the adsorbent to dry it. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, steam is supplied at a and after passing through the adsorbent b is led through the accumulator B. Condensate is withdrawn at f and the remaining steam and vapour passes out at e. Subsequently the drying medium is admitted at a1 and passed through the apparatus in the reverse direction. The heat accumulator is preferably composed of a number of separate units to prevent temperature equalization within it, or it may be placed within the adsorption chamber itself. The heat-storing medium may be either solid or liquid, e.g. the condensate obtained from the regeneration of the adsorbent may itself be used for this purpose. Supplementary heating and cooling devices and heat-recovery devices such as compression evaporators may be used in conjunction with the accumulator.
