351,472. Optical sound recording or reproducing apparatus. OWENS, F. H., 2647, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. March 21, 1930, No. 10018/31. Divided on 351,058. [Class 40 (ii).] Optical sound recording or reproducing apparatus comprises a slit member for passing light from a source to a photographic film, and means for adjusting the slit member rotatively and longitudinally with respect to the direction of the light. The reproducing apparatus shown comprises a casting 1 which contains a tube 3, within which are mounted condenser lenses 24 adapted to focus light from a lamp 25 upon a slit 26 in a plate fixed in the tube. The casting 1 supports at one end spindles 6, 13 bearing guide rollers 7, 14 for the film 15, the spindle 6 also carrying a disc 12 which co-operates with the roller 14 to form a light-defining path 16 as described in Specification 351,058. A lens system 28 in the tube, with which the passage 16 is in alignment, focuses an image of the slit on the film, behind which a photo-electric cell 76 is mounted. A lug 30 secured to the side of the tube 3 has a longitudinal slot 31 and a vertical slot 32. These slots are engaged respectively by pins 37, 40, eccentrically fixed on discs 36, 39, the discs being rotatably mounted on a plate 34 which is screwed to the casting 1. A slot or groove 38 is formed in each disc to enable it to be rotated bv means of a tool, such movements being transmitted through the pins 37, 40 to the tube 3. By this adjusting means, the slit can be brought into exact alignment with the sound trace on the film, and correct focusing can be effected.
